The Monetization Trap

 

Counter-intuitively to many, focusing on monetization during the creative process is often the wrong approach. Monetization-as-a-catalyst is designed to increase profit margins, not expression. It often encourages giving the consumer as little as possible for the highest price reachable.

I am not against capitalism, but I am cautious about "prostituting" creativity. While I don’t imply you should work for free, there is a vital distinction to be made. When art becomes a "chore," it is cheapened — even if sold for top dollar. It loses authenticity. Instead of being who you are, it becomes who you think others will buy. You might get paid quickly, but the result will be hollow and unfulfilling if you aren’t expressing yourself, but merely copying an expectation.

 

 

The Interpretation vs. The Notes

 

Consider a musician following a sheet to a T for leisure. It may sound perfect, but it lacks personal identity. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, yet, conversely, an artist who plays their own interpretation — shifting the tempo, adding a sustained note, or introducing a staccato "flavor" — creates a unique celebration of that piece.

Personally, that makes it more fun when I play. For example, if I am playing along to a song on my drums, I might add a fill here or there or shift percussion flavors — simply because I want to and I can.

Think of David Bowie’s "The Man Who Sold the World." For many, the Nirvana MTV Unplugged cover is the definitive version, as it actually ranked higher on the charts. Or Paul McCartney’s "Live and Let Die" — I first heard it via Guns n' Roses. These artists took an original and added their own interpretation, turning it into something authentic to them, even if it wasn't the "first-of-a-kind" original.

 

 

Authenticity vs. Originality

 

These are not synonymous. Originality is first-of-a-kind; Authenticity is one-of-a-kind.

A prototype is valuable because it is the first, but its authenticity is what makes it worth emulating. When a piece is organic, it sits several steps higher than a commissioned work. It isn't created in exchange for something; it is a part of the artist manifesting those fleeting, unrecoverable moments into a tangible reality.

 

 

The Knoxville Prodigy

 

Years ago, I met a guitarist in Knoxville, TN. He was technically flawless, playing a custom-shop Fender Stratocaster with immense skill. Yet, he looked bored to death.

When we spoke, I complimented his playing. He told me, "I can play anything I can hear in my head — but I feel constrained. I am playing other people’s music, not mine." Then, he did something I’ve remembered for over a quarter of a century. With his volume turned all the way down, he played a few licks of his own inspiration.

Even unplugged, those notes were full of soul. His face lit up. In those few seconds, he was his authentic self, not just a member of a cover band; he was the artist he was meant to be. The venue did not witness the most soulful part of his performance that night, but I did.

I am immortalizing that moment here because it represents the BZV mission: Help your ideas be expressed in the way they were meant to be. BZV
