Renee Good — a 37-year-old American citizen and mother — is unable to articulate her final moments, but we can. As a Veteran Navy Intel Analyst, my expertise is to defeat narrative warfare tactics and extrapolate reality. Despite the spin and misinformation — no matter how this gets framed — the January 7th shooting of Renee was not a justified act of self-defense. It was a one-handed execution by an ICE federal agent who broke many rules entrusted to those given a government-issued firearm and positional authority.
The Department of Homeland Security and the Trump administration claim the ICE agent was "rammed" and acted in self-defense, repeatedly calling Renee a “terrorist.” Yet video evidence from multiple angles reveals a conflicting order to a civilian by federal agents in plainclothes. One group of agents shouted with expletives for Renee to both exit and stay in the vehicle, while Agent Jonathan Ross approached from a different vector, filming with his personal cell phone — not a government bodycam — wearing civilian clothes and a flak jacket.
When Renee looked at Ross and calmly stated, “I’m not mad at you, dude,” she was indeed de-escalating. Yet an ICE agent tried to forcefully open her door. It does not matter what she was doing before because she was attempting to leave the scene peacefully, and law enforcement is supposed to de-escalate. If she was in the wrong, they had her description and license plate number should an arrest warrant be needed. This was on a residential street, surrounded by masked men in civilian clothes with no clear agency markings. It is worth mentioning the rampant reporting of ICE impersonators and videos of actual ICE agents brutalizing civilians — including citizens.
Agent Ross is a 10-year ICE veteran, a firearm and active shooter instructor, and a prior military machine gunner. He is supposed to teach that firearms are tools of last resort. Yes, he was in a car-related incident months prior, but that is why he is supposed to be held to a higher standard. He repeated several mistakes. He unsuccessfully used a Taser 10 in the former incident, so he shot Renee three times with a 9mm government-issued pistol.
Ross did not drop his personal cell phone when he fired the 9mm pistol with one hand. He ignored that the accuracy of these rounds is just over 50 yards and, if it misses, it can travel in excess of 2,000 yards astray. He had zero regard for the fields of fire, then further dehumanized Renee by calling her a “fing bh” after firing upon her.
There is a fifth — unwritten — universal gun safety rule those of us who were qualified to carry a government-issued firearm remember: Know your target and what lies beyond it. When he discharged three rounds into a moving SUV — including two through the side window at point-blank range — he, in fact, escalated the very risk he used as a defense to every person in the area. Firing at a moving vehicle is prohibited by the US Government, including ICE’s own Force Continuum rules, because it turns a 4,500-pound Honda Pilot into an unguided missile.
A bullet to a driver does not stop a car like in the movies. This heavy SUV careened into a white sedan and a pole, potentially running over protesters, bystanders, and Ross’s own teammates. Ross's shooting defense ignores the residential homes in the background, the people on scene, and the black dog in Renee's backseat.
Accountability is not a partisan issue. Winning by cheating is still losing. An organization is only as strong as its weakest link. If the shooter had been a "left-wing" agent and the victim a MAGA mother, the condemnation should remain universal. Violence has no place in America — period.
Law enforcement is a high-risk profession. If they cannot accept the risk of an "insufferable civilian" without jumping straight to lethal force, they should find a different job. If fear is a catalyst, it is not a matter of if, but when miscalculations compound. Much like people who don’t want to risk dying atop Everest, K2, or any other high peak don’t go climbing to the “death zone” 26,200 feet above sea level — it’s a choice. As it was my choice to defend America with my life when I was in the Navy. We are held to a higher standard. Greater authority requires greater responsibility — not the other way around.
Any cover-up by an agency protecting its "weakest links" makes our entire nation unsafe. We are required to hold our teammates accountable, or risk eroding the fleeting trust the citizens have in our government institutions. Renee’s voice was not silenced; it was amplified — as it should be. BZV
